5 Things to Do Before You Book Your Photoshoot
If you're hiring a professional photographer to take your pictures, you're going to want to do a few things to get ready for your shoot. Here is my list of 5 things to consider before you go to your photoshoot!
- Consider the time of day. Light is everything in photography and you want to make sure that your photographer is able to capture you in the best light. This means asking her opinion of the time of day and seeing where that works for you (and your children's schedule!) Hint---The worst time of day for family photos is 12:00-2:00 when the sun is the brightest in the sky. The most romantic time might be sunset or sunrise. But really soft light between 9:00-11:00 and 4:00-6:00 is all usually pretty good. Now, look at your children's schedule and work that timing around them! Do they get cranky at 5:00? Do they nap at 11:00? Make sure lighting and schedules work out. There are many times that are great for outdoor photos, so discuss with your photographer to make sure your schedule works with the lighting.
- Think location! Fairfield County has the best locations---rolling hills, ocean, forests, trails, meadows, flower fields. But what fits you and your vibe? Is it spring and you want photos in the cherry blossoms? Is it summer and you want photos next to the ocean? Or is it fall and you're dying for some fall foliage? These are all things to consider before you book your session. Sure, mini sessions are scheduled at certain locations and times, but your pictures are for you! So if the location isn't your jam, schedule a full portrait session and figure out where you'd like it. You'll have more time, more photos and it will be more authentically you. ***Caroline Murray Photography offers mini sessions at 5 different locations in the fall! There's bound to be one that meets your vibe!
- Consider the length of time. Yes, mini shoots are awesome. They're quick and fun and the price is right. However, if your child doesn't like to be photographed, this might not be for you! Your child might need a little longer to warm up and in that case, a full session is where you're going to want to look. Or perhaps you can book two mini sessions in a row if you know you'll need more time. You know your children, and if they're shy or reserved or just don't like strangers, a longer session might be the best way to ease into it. On the flip side, if your child loves to be photographed and you know their attention span is short, minis are perfect!
- What are you wearing and how does your family coordinate? Thinking of everything from top to bottom is the best way to look put together when you take your family photos. Not everyone has to match (in fact it's probably better if they don't!) but everyone should look cohesive. Here at Caroline Murray Photography, I will be happy to give advice or opinions on outfit selection.
- Relax! The best thing you can do on the day of the photoshoot is have fun. Don't worry about the kids not looking or cooperating. If you can simply smile and look at the camera, I can get the kids to smile and do the same. Often when I'm editing, I see mom and dad looking the wrong way because they're worried about what their kids are doing. Mom and Dad, you've done your part---now let the magic unfold!
